National premiere at Riddu Riđđu!
For the first time, there will be a national premiere of a feature film at Riddu Riđđu!
BIRDS OF PASSAGE is directed by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra, who were nominated for an Oscar in 2015 for EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT. Their new film is an epic tale of the origins of drug trafficking in Colombia.
BIRDS OF PASSAGE follows a Wayuu family who gets involved in the sale of marijuana to Americans in the early 1970s. Sales escalate fast and greed, passion and honor eventually trigger a war in the family. The Wayuu people are the largest indigenous people in Colombia and live mostly in the north of the country, where the movie was also filmed.
BIRDS OF PASSAGE will open the prestigious Directors' Fortnight, which is the Cannes Festival's program highlighting new director talents. EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT also had its premiere there.
Mer Film is an associate producer with the support of the Riddu Riddu Festival and International Sami Film Institute.
