Indigenous music: Traditional and commercial music?

Seminar

Where do we draw the line when modernizing indigenous cultural expressions and who decides? Are there no boundaries as long as Sámis want it ourselves?

The use of joik in the TV shows “Muitte mu” and “Stjernekamp” contributed to making joik visible on television, but also sparked a heated debate in Sápmi about who can commercialize joik and in what way. Similar debates are ongoing in Canada in relation to the Indigenous Music Awards, about who can use katajjaq, the throat singing of the Inuit, in pop music.

Which opportunities do indigenous artists have to be noticed in a global music industry? Can they sing in their traditional languages or do they need to sing in the language of the majority to gain listeners?
