Open House: Lásságámmi

Art
Annet

Welcome to Lásságámmi, the home of multidisciplinary artist and one of the pioneers of Sámi art, Nils-Aslak Valkeapää (Áillohaš).

The house preserves parts of his artistic legacy and is itself a beautiful and architecturally distinctive example of Sámi architecture. Valkeapää was actively involved in the design process of  the unique log house, which is situated on the shoreline of Skibotn. The house was created in collaboration with his close friend, the Finnish architect Eino Jokinen.

Today, Lásságámmi serves year-round as an artist and research residency. For this reason, the house is only open to the public when it is not occupied by visiting artists or researchers.

Now we're opening the doors to visitors. The coffee is hot, the fireplace is lit, and the music is playing. And if you happen to bring your swimwear, you might even find a use for it...

In recent years, the foundation has upgraded the house and invited Sámi artists and craftspeople to create new works especially for Lásságámmi. Although the work is still ongoing, the guided tour offers a chance to experience newly commissioned functional art alongside Valkeapää's own works and artworks from the foundation's collection.

Outside, construction is underway on a Sámi traditional out house (áiti). The foundation and timber frame are already in place, while the remainder of the building will be completed during late summer and autumn.

Joar Nango, who also designed and built Áhči áiti at Riddusletta, shares the architectural and artistic responsibility for the ongoing development of Lásságámmi and the design of the new áiti together with Eystein Tallerås.

Opening hours:

Wednesday, 8 July: 1:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Thursday, 9 July: 1:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Please note: There is no parking available at the house. However, it is only a short walk from the hotel, the marina, or Kramboden in the area.
