Workshop: Forging knife blade

Workshop

Short 3-day introductory workshop on forging laminated knife blades. The workshop runs over three days. The aim is to forge a laminated knife blade that will be hardened and tempered. The work is done according to old traditional methods without the use of machines. We will also talk about Sámi knife tradition and show examples with regard to design and decoration. On the course, materials procured specifically for forging knives will be used, but we will also demonstrate the reuse of iron and steel that is suitable for knives or other cutting tools.

The course will mostly consist of practical work at the anvil, but also some theoretical teaching or review.

It is recommended to wear old clothes/work clothes, preferably made of natural materials such as cotton or wool. Simple safety glasses should be used and hearing protection can be fine.

Course instructors are Vartosmeden Jan-Tore Ovesen and blacksmith Hans-Erik Olsen from Nord-Troms Museum.
