Grand reunion with down under.
Yothu Yindi are returning to the fields of Riddu. This time they are bringing their grandchildren in East Journey, who are continuing the legacy, and are now considered the number one indigenous rock band in Australia.
“We are very happy to be back performing at the 2015 Riddu Riddu Festival; we look forward to the same energy and excitement that we experienced here in 2002. And we are very proud to be working with East Journey” says Yothu Yindi.
Yothu Yindi is the most sucsessfull indigenous band to hail from Australia, and created a magnificent energy when they played Riddu Riđđu in 2002. And for this year’s festival they will be joined by the next generation indigenous rock stars, who are believed to become just as big as their mentors in Yothu Yindi.
The two bands released the EP «The genesis project» together earlier this year. The collaboration symbolizes the hand over from the iconic Australian rockers in Yothu Yindi to the next generation. East Journey takes the step into the space left by Yothu Yindi and are echoing their forbearers strong cultural and spiritual voice.
The band members are of the Yolngu people who belong to the traditional area of Arnhem Land in north-east of Australia. Indigenous groups of Australia are in vulnerable positions all over Australia, and Yolngu people have stood out in the political fight for land recognition. Remote indigenous communities all over australia are struggling to continue their traditional lifestyle. State and private interest in resource extraction forces rural communities off their traditional grounds and into more urban lifestyles. These are realities many indigenous people are experiencing all over the world, also in Sápmi.», says festival director Karoline Trollvik.
Trollvik continues; «This is a fantastic booking that I know a lot of people who are fond of Riddu Riđđu will greatly appreciate! I know that the Riddu-staff became very fond of Yothu Yindi last time they visited, so this will be a grand reunion for many. Anyone who is interested in experiencing proud indigenous culture bearers with Yidaki didgeridoo and rock in a powerful harmony should make sure to book tickets for this years Riddu Riđđu! »
