Conversation with Northern people of the year: Queer Indigenous

For over 20 years, Riddu Riđđu has had a special focus on Indigenous people in the north through the program "Northern People of the Year" and in that way honored various Indigenous peoples through people-to-people cooperation and artistic expression.

In 2024, the festival honors Queer indigenous people as Northern People of the Year and have gathered artists and cultural practitioners from Kalaallit Nunaat, USA, Canada and Sápmi. 

Indigenous peoples from all over the world have rich and diverse cultural heritages that are fought to be protected. Diverse sexuality and multiple genders are part of the history and cultural heritage of many Indigenous communities. Several studies show that it is precisely heterosexism and homophobia that is a modern phenomenon. Nevertheless, there can be great challenges associated with being a minority within a minority and many queer Indigenous people experience not being accepted in their own communities.
