Uaajerneq (Mask dance)

Performance
Northern people of the year

Come and experience the unique mask dance, Uaajeerneq, from Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) by the Tupeq in Riddu Siida!

Uaajeerneq is one of the oldest storytelling traditions among the Inuit of Kalaallit Nunaat. Traditionally, it was primarily used to teach children about reproduction, fear, and comedy, while also serving as a way to pass the time during the long polar nights.

The mask dancer shifts between fear, comedy, and sexuality, responding to the audience’s reactions. By transforming and distorting their face, the performer enters a spiritual state where the boundaries between human and animal, woman and man, cease to exist.

The mask dancer is Aviana Steinbacher from Kalaallit Nunaat.
