Election 2025: Sami enough to vote?
Who should have the right to vote in the Sami Parliament election? In recent years, the Sami electoral roll has been the subject of intense debate - both within Sápmi and in the Norwegian society. Some argue that the requirements for documenting Sami heritage are too strict, while others believe they are too lenient. Following media attention and political disagreements, the questions of belonging and identity have become both personal and political.
Everyone listed in the electoral roll must declare that they identify as Sami. Yet, according to a Norstat survey, 7% say they do not, despite being registered. So, what does it mean to be “Sami enough” to vote in the Sami Parliament election? And does it really matter if some people in the roll don’t identify as Sami?
bring together politicians and eligible voters for an open conversation about what the electoral roll means in practice, how it currently functions, and whether changes are needed.
Welcome to a debate about democracy, identity, and the right to be heard.
Panel to be announced soon.
