Historical transcriptions of Łingit songs in the colonial archives of Europe: a storytelling session with music

Seminar

The storytelling is with Dr Maria Shaa Tláa Williams (Łingit, Professor of ethnomusicology, University of Alaska Anchorage).

Dr. Maria will briefly address who the Łingit people are - their traditional homelands and talk about their music and singing style(s). In the 18th century European visitors commented on the use of harmony in their singing and made transcriptions. Dr. Maria and other Alaskan scholars researched the Malaspina visit of 1788 and the musical transcriptions. The presentation will include modern Łingit music and dance festivals. Maria will also teach everyone a song and dance!
